Harper Construction Working on Phase 7 of the Student Officer Quarters at The Basic School
Phase 7 of the Student Officer Quarters at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia is well underway. The design-build project is the third phase completed by Harper Construction on the Marine Corps Base, with Phase 5 & 6 receiving beneficial occupancy in September of 2016. Each phase consists of one 129 unit building that provides housing for Marines undergoing initial training at The Basic School. All three of the buildings feature a geothermal mechanical system which provides an energy efficient method of heating and cooling. The Student Officer Quarters project will also provide the school with 1,236 kWdc of renewable energy from a photovoltaic system mounted on nearby carports.
Prior to the start of construction, Harper’s team oversaw the demolition of Graves and O’Bannon Hall. Limited information was known on each of these over 100,000 square foot buildings and their surrounding site, leading to many unforeseen subterranean site conditions. This created unique challenges for both Harper’s team and the government. However, through a well-developed relationship with the owners’ representatives, Harper’s team was able to successfully navigate through the unexpected challenges while maintaining a safe work environment and providing a quality product to the owner.
Currently, Phase 7 of The Student Officer Quarters project has completed the building structure and is working on completing interior finishes. Harper’s team is making great progress and looks to add permanent power and start commissioning at the beginning of March.
